The Dyldam Parramatta Eels have set a new crowd record for a match against the Wests Tigers, with 50,668 people flocking to ANZ Stadium to watch the Blue and Gold play.

The crowd is the biggest crowd the NRL has seen so far in 2014, eclipsing the Good Friday match between the Rabbitohs and Bulldogs of 43,255.

It’s also Parramatta’s largest home crowd game in 50 years - with our previous highest regular season match way back in 1964 with just over 51,919.

“When the team ran out I think it was a bit of a spine-tingling moment for the club, saying we were back,” Parramatta Eels CEO Scott Seward said.

“To still draw 50,000 people to the game considering what’s happened the last few years, it was a big moment for the club.”

The previous benchmark for an Eels vs Tigers game was 34,272 back in 2009 - a Wests Tigers home game - which was smashed by 16,396 people on Easter Monday.

“There’s no better place to be playing than in front of your home crowd and in front of 50,000 people,” Eels centre Willie Tonga said.

“It was a great buzz and for [the supporters] to stick around for the whole 80 minutes was awesome.”

It’s the biggest regular season crowd the Parramatta Eels have played in since taking on the Penrith Panthers in the season opening double header at ANZ Stadium in 2001.

“It was actually hard to hear at times; 50,000 [is a number] you’d be happy with for a finals game, so to get a regular season match at that number is pretty special,” Eels forward Darcy Lussick said.

We thank everyone for coming out to the game - the show of support from the Blue and Gold Army was absolutely incredible and we look forward to the Easter Monday fixture becoming a regular blockbuster event for years to come!
