On Wednesday 19 November 2014, Dyldam Parramatta Eels players Kenny Edwards and Joseph Paulo visited the Children’s Hospital at Westmead to take part in the 2UE Radiothon.
Edwards and Paulo, along with other guests and sporting stars from various codes, spent the morning taking part in ‘Race for Grace’, a 24 hour stationary bike ride, raising funds for the Grace Centre for Newborn Care, visiting children in the wards whilst happily taking photos and signing autographs for visitors and patients.
“Joseph Paulo and I, when they asked us whether we wanted to come down, we put our hands up straight away,” Edwards said.
“We got thrown into the task (Race 4 Grace) and we happily took it. It’s been tough so far but its all worthwhile.”
As a father of two, Edwards cherished the opportunity to be able to visit patients throughout the hospital to put a smile on their face.
“I’ve come out here a few times. Parramatta have a lot to do with the Children’s Hospital at Westmead and every time I come out here it really makes my day that much better,” Edwards said.
“Coming here and spending some time with the kids here, it touches me and I’m more than happy when these kind of things come along. My kids changed my life so to help these kids out is just too easy.”
The Eels are a few weeks into their pre-season training camp but nothing was going to stop Edwards from volunteering to ride in the ‘Race For Grace’ event.
“We have been training in Seattle in America for the last few weeks but the training has turned up this week and it’s getting tough now but this (Race for Grace) is right up there!” Edwards said.
“We trained this morning but I wanted to come here to do a bit of bike riding! Being able to come out here, make these kids days and help them out makes me smile”.
