The Wentworthville Magpies have gone down to the Wyong Roos 44-12 in a dominant performance from the top of the ladder Roos at Pirtek Stadium on Saturday 29 August.
In the 14th minute, the Roos five-eighth, Jono Ford, scored a straight forward try off a deflection to open the scoring for the match.
Both teams had their chances in the first half but couldn’t convert, with the Magpies orchestrating a nice play in the 31st minute only for the last pass to go astray.
The Wyong Roos extended their lead in the 33rd minute through an Omar Slaimankhel try. The successful conversion gave the Roos a 12-0 lead.
Just 3 minutes later, Ryan Matterson found his way into the Wyong line and a pass landed straight on his chest. He ran 85 metres to score under the posts with the easy conversion narrowing the gap to 12-6.
With seconds to go in the half, Matterson kicked a 40/20 to put the Magpies on the attack, but with only enough time for one play, they couldn’t get over the line.
The second half started with the Magpies looking slick in attack but unable to get over the Roos line. A great chance from Ben Crooks went begging as he fumbled the ball over the line.
In the 55th minute, the Magpies took their chances with some movement to the right wing ending with James Tuitahi diving into the corner. A perfect conversion from the touch line by Beau Henry tied the scores 12 apiece.
The Roos hit right back five minutes later with a dummy half try to Abraham Papalii, giving the Roos the lead by six with 20 minutes remaining in the match.
In the 63rd minute, the Roos took advantage of some lazy defending following a penalty and Tyler Cornish finished off a 40 metre clean break to score and convert, giving the Roos a 24-12 lead.
Another try to Papalii down the left followed by the out stretched arm of Nathan Stapleton increased the Roos lead to 32-12.
Tyler Cornish added to his tally of points with a breakaway try quickly followed by a Willie Manu touchdown through the middle.
Unfortunately, the Wenty Magpies couldn’t get back into the game in the second half as Wyong claimed the victory and a chance to claim the minor premiership in the NSW Cup.
