Dyldam Parramatta Eels winger Clint Gutherson admitted he was shocked to see teammate Beau Scott omitted from the NSW VB Blues side for Origin I.

As the Blues finish preparations for the series opener at ANZ Stadium, Scott will line up for the Blue and Gold on Monday night as they face the Newcastle Knights at Hunter Stadium.

“I thought he was a shoo-in personally,” Gutherson said.

“Watching him over the last couple of years as a fan of his you would’ve thought he’d be there, he’s been in some of the best form he’s been in. I would be [relieved if I was a Queenslander]. He’s a bit of a nut on the field so I’d probably be happy not to have him against me.”

“He’ll have a point to prove and he’ll turn up Monday ready to go. Everyone knows what you’re going to get from him and what he’s going to offer, he’s always leading from the front and everyone just gets behind him.”

While Scott looks to overcome a corked thigh ahead of Monday’s clash, which saw him leave the field early in the Eels’ Round 11 loss to the Melbourne Storm, halfback Kieran Foran is also fighting to be fit for Round 12 after picking up a shoulder injury in last week’s return to the field.

“He looks alright,” Gutherson said.

“He’s been on the physio table all day so I’m sure he’ll be playing Monday and we’re hoping that he is. I’m sure it’ll take him a bit of time to get back into the full swing of things, but  at the moment we’re just backing him and he seems fine.”

“He was running the ball, he was passing the ball [last week]. He hurt his shoulder early in the game, which sort of hampered his return, but you would want him [there if he was] 50/50 anyway out there; that’s the player he is.”

For the Blue and Gold, the Knights match up will see them look to post a much-needed victory after back-to-back losses, and Gutherson said he’s prepared for the task ahead.

“We’ve sort of talked about that,” Gutherson said of the past two games and the turmoil surrounding the club in recent weeks.

“A few things on the field like competing sets and getting through the game really let us down, and against Melbourne and Souths you can’t do that.”

“We’ve just got to get over it. We’ve just got to go out there on Monday night and do our best to get the win, and hopefully that win will get you guys off our back for a bit.”
