Congratulations to Darcy Lussick, the winner of the prestigious Ken Thornett NRL Players' Player award for 2013 at our Presentation Evening!
Darcy was nominated by his peers as their player of the season, which he says is a huge honour.
"I'm still a little bit surprised, I definitely didn't see it coming!" he said.
"There are a few blokes here who I thought had good years, despite our winning percentage on the field. I'm just over the moon and really grateful."
Darcy says the biggest honour is to have this award chosen not by the coaching staff, but by his teammates.
"As a player, the biggest thing is players who want to play with you, and that's the biggest compliment you can get, is that your own teammates want to play with you," he said.
Departing head coach Ricky Stuart spoke about Darcy's growth as a player on the field and a man off the field, after only becoming Blue and Gold 12 months ago.
"It was a pretty tough pre-season, I think the toughest one I've ever done - and Ricky and I didn't see eye to eye on a few things, and I probably tried to fight him a couple of times!" Darcy said.
"But at the end of the day I can see where he's coming from, and I'm so grateful for what he's done for me personally this year, I'm forever in debt to him."
Well done Darcy, you're a very deserving winner!
