Dyldam Parramatta Eels centre Api Pewhairangi has encouraged a number of his teammates to shave their heads to raise money for one of his friends who is battling cancer.

Api and 24 year old Chase Ngawati have been friends for the last decade, with Chase living with the Pewhairangi family in New Zealand while they went to high school.

Chase has been in and out of hospital since 2009, when at 19, he was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia and underwent aggressive chemotherapy.

He went into remission in 2009, but in January 2010 the cancer returned, requiring a move to Wellington Hospital to receive a bone marrow transplant.

As a result of continual treatment, Chase has developed an incurable lung disease - and is raising money for his bucket list.
