The Dyldam Parramatta Eels would like to congratulate Blacktown PCYC Junior Rugby League Football Club who have scored a massive win – named New South Wales Good Sports Club of the Year.
The Good Sports Awards recognise community clubs and people who show leadership in encouraging healthy behaviours to tackle alcohol, obesity and mental health issues through sport.
The Australian Drug Foundation's pioneering Good Sports program works with more than 7000 clubs nationwide to help them develop healthier and safer environments for their members, and create a healthier future for our younger generations.
NSW Good Sports Operations Manager Russel Grimson said Blacktown PCYC Spartans implemented the Good Sports program because its culture was being affected by a number of children from broken homes.
"The club has used Good Sports for support and guidance to deliver cultural change to players from low socio economic areas who are exposed to alcohol at a young age and on a regular basis," said Mr Grimson.
"They provide education on the dangers of alcohol and offer a safe place for their players and that is exactly what community sport is all about.
"While many clubs across New South Wales have worked hard alongside Good Sports to provide healthier environments for their members, Blacktown PCYC Spartans is the well-deserved winner of this year's award."
Club Coordinator Steve Warwick said the club's aim was to educate parents and players about alcohol its harms.
"We do not serve alcohol at the club and we've developed a healthy living program with the canteen. We have changed the menus and offer healthier alternatives such as sandwiches, fruit, and low fat and sugar food and drinks.
"We promote a positive space for everyone to enjoy the game - from parents and volunteers, to players on and off the field." As the NSW winner, the Blacktown PCYC Spartans will now go into the running to win the 2015 National Good Sports Club of the Year Award. The national winner will be announced on 19 November. Good Sports clubs have less risky drinking and are healthier, safer and more family-friendly places to enjoy sport. According to independent research, and in a world-first, Good Sports has been proven to reduce the likelihood of risky drinking by 37% and the risk of alcohol-related harm to club members by 42%.
