Over the last couple of weeks, Parramatta Eels Community Partnerships Executive Josh Phillips has travelled over 4000km’s around the Barkley Region (the centre of the Northern Territory), running rugby league clinics throughout the area to promote the Blue & Gold and the sport to a region of the NT that has not had rugby league present in a very long time.
Organised through Barkley’s School Sport Coordinator Pam Dillion, Phillips has visited 10 schools and communities in the area.
The majority of the students at these schools had never even heard of rugby league before this experience so it was something new and exciting for the 300 students that took part.
The communities visited were Newcastle Waters, Elliott, Tennant Creek,, Epenarra, Canteen Creek , Willowra, Ti-Tree, Ampilatwatja, Alpurrurulam, Rockhampton Downs.
Dillon from School Sport NT, along with the NT Community, was very pleased with the fortnight of activities in the region and having the Blue & Gold visit some very remote locations.
The Blue & Gold are planning to re-visit the Barkley Region again in 2020, with the hope to add a League Tag carnival at the end of the two week visit.
