Vale Peter Ryan

The Parramatta Eels are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Peter Ryan on September 21, 2025, aged 91.

Born in Sydenham on December 3, 1933, Peter grew up in the Newtown area and began his rugby league career with the Newtown club. Between 1953 and 1959, he played 119 first grade games, establishing himself as a talented and reliable lock forward. He was a key member of Newtown’s grand final sides in 1954 and 1955 and represented the club in the Country Carnival in 1953, 1954, 1958, and 1959.

In 1960, Peter took on the role of captain-coach for Mareeba in North Queensland, leading the team to a premiership and representing the region against the touring French side.

He returned to Sydney to join the Parramatta Eels, making 14 first grade appearances across the 1961 and 1962 seasons.

Rugby league was truly a family passion, with Peter’s sons, Mick Ryan and Peter Ryan Jnr, proudly following in their father’s footsteps.

The Parramatta Eels extend their heartfelt condolences to Peter’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Forever Eel #198.
