Elyse Sene-Lefao has been named a recipient of the prestigious Rising Women of Western Sydney Scholarship, recognising her contribution to grassroots sport, community well-being and cultural representation.
At the heart of Elyse’s impact is the Elyse Sene-Lefao Running Club (ESRC), a fortnightly initiative she founded in Western Sydney. What began as a simple idea to get people moving has grown into a supportive, welcoming space where runners and walkers of all abilities feel encouraged to show up for themselves.
“I created ESRC because I wanted people to know they belong in these spaces,” Elyse said. “Running isn’t about pace, time or distance. It’s about showing up for yourself and moving the way you want to.”
In 2025, Elyse made history as the first Samoan woman to complete the 100km distance at Ultra-Trail Australia, a milestone achievement for Samoan women in endurance sport.
Elyse plans to use the scholarship funds to enrol in a certified running program and qualify as an accredited coach, enabling her to deliver structured, inclusive programs that support all fitness levels, particularly Polynesian and underrepresented communities.
“Becoming a qualified coach means I can take ESRC to the next level,” she said. “I want to build stronger programs, create more inclusive opportunities and expand ESRC. My vision is to welcome more people into running and create that safe space where everyone feels empowered to move.”
Elyse also hopes to encourage participation in events across the City of Parramatta, including the Parramatta Half Marathon.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter said this collaboration with the Parramatta Eels and Western Sydney University is an investment in the next generation of influential females of the west.
”This is about investing in local talent and helping young women in Western Sydney to reach their full potential, providing them with a platform to make a positive impact in the community,” Cr Zaiter said.
“The scholarship has been a game changer for last year’s scholarship winner, Kirstene Ciaparra, who has since taken the next step in her career and is now working with the Parramatta Eels in a permanent capacity.”
“We’re looking forward to seeing Elyse use this scholarship on behalf of the community, while rising up as a leader in Western Sydney through her outstanding contribution in community sport and aspiration to lead others to a healthier life through fitness and social connection.”
Parramatta Eels CEO Jim Sarantinos praised Elyse’s leadership and the broader impact of the initiative.
“The Rising Women of Western Sydney Scholarship exists to back leaders who create real change,” Jim said. “Elyse embodies the strength of this program, she’s not only building a run club, she’s building confidence, representation and long-term community wellbeing.”
