The Parramatta Eels join the rugby league family in mourning the loss of Neville ‘Nifty’ Glover, who died on April 2, aged 70.
Born on July 22, 1955, in Sydney, Neville Kenneth Glover discovered rugby league at the age of seven, beginning a lifelong passion for the game. A Seven Hills Toongabbie junior, he joined the Parramatta Eels in 1975 and quickly established himself as a rising star of the game.
Neville made his first grade debut that same year and was named Club Rookie of the Year. In an outstanding debut season in Blue and Gold, he scored six tries in 13 first grade appearances, along with two tries in three reserve grade games and seven tries in 10 Under 23s games. His electrifying speed and signature goose step on the wing made him a fan favourite.
In 1976, Neville played in the Club’s inaugural first grade Grand Final appearance, alongside a talented Parramatta side.
His strong form led to representative honours, including two Test appearances for Australia against New Zealand in 1978. He also represented NSW City and later NSW in 1979 against Great Britain.
Across seven seasons with the Parramatta Eels, Neville played 121 first grade games and scored 55 tries. He concluded his playing career with Penrith in 1983, before transitioning into coaching, where he contributed to junior and senior rugby league across Wyong and Cessnock.
Neville’s contribution to the Parramatta Eels was formally recognised with Life Membership, and in 2002 was named among the inaugural “Legends of Parramatta” Hall of Fame inductees, as voted by fans.
Beyond rugby league, Neville served with distinction in the New South Wales Police Force from 1981 to 2017, rising to the rank of Senior Sergeant in the Prosecuting Branch. His service was recognised with the New South Wales Police Medal in 2013 and Police Prosecutor of the Year in 2008.
A dedicated community contributor, Neville supported numerous charitable organisations, including the Men of League Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Camp Quality, Cystic Fibrosis initiatives, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, and Make-A-Wish Australia.
In recognition of his broader contributions, Neville was awarded the Australian Sports Medal in 2000 and the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2018 for service to rugby league and the community.
Neville’s passing has been deeply felt by the Club, his former teammates, colleagues, and friends. He will forever remain a cherished member of the Blue and Gold family.
