VALE - Robert 'Bobby' Jay

The Parramatta Eels join the rugby league community in mourning the passing of Robert "Bobby" Jay - Eel #300.

Born on February 25, 1953, Bob attended Liverpool Boys High School and established his skills with Cabramatta rugby league playing alongside 8 players who would go on to make first grade, before embarking on a remarkable nine-year career with the Eels.

Between 1972 and 1980, he played 65 first grade games, including six finals matches across the 1978 and 1979 seasons. In total, he made nearly 200 appearances for the Blue and Gold across first grade, reserve grade and Under 23s.

Bob embodied the spirit of rugby league's great clubmen during the semi-professional era, with his contribution to Parramatta extending well beyond the first grade side. He played a key role in one of the club's most successful periods, helping the Eels establish remarkable depth across all grades and dominate the Club Championship.

Renowned for his rugged defence and unwavering commitment, Bob enjoyed arguably his finest season in 1978, becoming a key member of Parramatta's formidable forward pack and playing in the club's semi-final replay against Manly.

In addition to his premiership appearances, Bob represented Parramatta in 10 pre-season matches across the Wills Cup and Craven Mild Cup, along with eight games in the mid-season AMCO Cup.

Bob was an invaluable member of the club. He juggled his work as a storeman at the container base, but whenever called upon in first grade, he never let his teammates or the club down.

In recognition of his outstanding service, Bob was awarded Life Membership of the Parramatta Eels in 1981.

Following his retirement from playing, Bob remained close to former teammates, including Kevin Webb and Warren Snodgrass. He also stayed active by playing touch football with the Desert Dogs, helping him maintain his fitness.

The Parramatta Eels extend their deepest condolences to Bob's wife, Janette and family, his teammates and many friends.

Forever Eel #300.
