The Parramatta Eels are deeply saddened to announce the passing of club great Barry Rushworth, aged 85.
Born in Lithgow on August 23, 1941, Barry began his rugby league journey in the NSW country town before emerging as one of the game's outstanding centres. His talent earned him selection for Country and New South Wales in 1963, before he was plucked from the bush to represent Australia on the historic 1963–64 Kangaroo tour of Great Britain and France. He lined up alongside some of the biggest names in rugby league at the time including Arthur Summons, Reg Gasnier, and Dick Thornett.
Representing the Kangaroos was a remarkable achievement for the Lithgow product, who featured in 19 matches on tour and crossed for nine tries against international and club opposition.
His performances attracted the attention of Parramatta, and Barry joined the club in 1964, making his first-grade debut as Eel #225.
A dependable and talented centre, Rushworth became a regular fixture in Parramatta's first-grade three-quarter line, spending the majority of his playing career in the blue and gold. Between 1964 and 1971, he made 140 appearances for the club, scoring 25 tries and contributing 75 points.
His arrival coincided with a strong period for Parramatta, who finished second in his debut season under coach Ken Kearney, narrowly missing a place in the Grand Final after falling one win short.
Rushworth would go on to play with some of the greatest players in Parramatta history including the Ken and Dick Thornett, Ron Lynch, Bill Rayner, and his friend, Bob “Bear” O’Reilly.
Beyond his contribution to Parramatta, Rushworth remained connected to the country rugby league community. In 1974, he was a member of the Western Division side that won the inaugural Amco Cup, adding another significant achievement to his distinguished career.
Following his retirement from football, Barry managed the Royal Hotel, Wallerawang, and became a valued member of his local community. His connection to rugby league, and particularly to Parramatta, never faded. The blue and gold remained close to his heart, and he continued to maintain strong friendships with former teammates, regularly attending annual reunions.
In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the club, Barry Rushworth was inducted into the Parramatta Eels Hall of Fame in 2007, securing his place among the club's most respected figures.
Barry will be remembered for his contribution to the Eels, his achievements at representative level and the lasting connections he forged through rugby league.
The Parramatta Eels extend their deepest condolences to Barry's family, friends, former teammates and all those who knew him.
Forever Eel #225.
