The Parramatta Eels are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Laurie ‘Darby’ Wakefield, Eel #279.
Signed by the Eels in 1970 as a 22-year-old from Parkes, Wakefield was a talented and courageous fullback who made his mark at every level of the game. Before arriving at Parramatta, Laurie had already represented NSW and Country, achievements that brought him to the attention of the club. He was also a gifted sportsman beyond rugby league, representing at hockey as well.
Wakefield played alongside the likes of Barry Rushworth, Denis Fitzgerald and Bob O’Reilly at Parramatta, under the guidance of Captain/Coach Ron Lynch. Though small in stature, Laurie consistently played well above his weight, earning a reputation for his heart, and reliability. He was particularly safe under the high ball and never shirked the tough moments.
Between 1970 and 1972, Wakefield made 14 appearances for the Eels, scoring two tries, and also represented the club in the 1971–72 pre-season Wills Cup. He was considered unlucky not to play more first grade matches, competing for the fullback position against champion Ken Thornett, who returned to the club in 1971.
At representative level, Wakefield started at fullback in the opening match of the 1970 NSW series against Queensland and played for NSW Country Firsts under captain John Raper, further testament to his quality and standing in the game.
After finishing his playing career, Wakefield returned to Parkes, giving back to his local community and the game he loved.
The Parramatta Eels extend their sincere condolences to Laurie Wakefield’s family, friends and teammates.
Forever Eel #279.
