The Parramatta Eels are deeply saddened by the loss of player Karl Lovell, who passed away on July 11, 2026 following a battle with illness.
Born in Auckland on December 9, 1977, Karl was a proud footballer whose dedication and passion for the game earned him the respect of teammates, opponents and supporters alike.
Karl made his first grade debut for Parramatta on March 7, 1997 in round 1 against North Sydney. He would go on to record 37 first grade appearances for the blue and gold.
His strength and wholehearted approach made him a valued member of the club.
Karl then moved to England and played with Sheffield and Huddersfield-Sheffield, before returning to Australia in 2001 to play with the Northern Eagles. He finished his career with Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks playing 16 games in the 2002 season.
He ranged between prop or second row and also played centre of wing.
While his achievements on the field will always be remembered, Karl will be most fondly remembered by those who knew him as a genuine teammate and a proud member of the rugby league family.
After retiring from professional rugby league, Lovell returned to his junior club, the Toukley Hawks, where he devoted his time to mentoring young players and supporting the local community.
The Parramatta Eels community extends its deepest condolences to Karl's family, friends and former teammates.
