The Parramatta Eels extend their deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Merle Overton, who passed away on August 26, 2026, just weeks shy of her 90th birthday.
Merle was farewelled today, September 4, at Castlebrook Memorial Park, surrounded by her three children, Karen, Craig and Grant, along with her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Born on September 15, 1936, Merle was the beloved wife of the late Alan Overton AM OAM, a much-loved and highly respected figure within the Parramatta Eels family and the broader Parramatta community.
It was Merle who introduced Alan to the excitement and atmosphere of a Parramatta Eels game day, a simple introduction that would become a significant part of their lives together. Alan, who was a General Manager at Eels sponsor James Hardie at the time, would go on to serve as President of the Parramatta Leagues Club and President of the Parramatta Eels, as well as Vice President of Ronald McDonald House Charities, and Vice President of the Scouts NSW Branch Council.
Together, Alan and Merle were a dynamic duo. They became well known for their presence and tireless efforts on game days, as well as their commitment to helping others throughout the community.
Their connection to Parramatta was woven deeply into their lives. The couple married and built their first home in Merrylands before later moving to the Kingsdene Estate, remaining proudly within the Parramatta district.
Merle's farewell was a fitting reflection of the love and memories that surrounded her, with a Blue and Gold coffin and Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You chosen as the recessional. Her life was one filled with family, community and enduring connections. The Parramatta Eels extend their sincere condolences to Merle's children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren during this difficult time.
