Black Fern Mataele signs with the Eels

The Parramatta Eels are delighted to announce that Black Fern, Martha Mataele has signed with the Club for two years until the end of 2026.

“Martha is an exciting footballer who can light up the field with her speed and agility,” said Parramatta Eels Football General Manager, Mark O’Neill.

“Her talent will add an extra attacking threat and strengthen our backline. We’re excited to see her make an impact in the NRLW.”

Mataele expressed her enthusiasm about transitioning from rugby union to rugby league.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to be joining the Parramatta Eels and bringing my skills to rugby league,” said Martha Mataele.

“The Eels are a growing force in the NRLW, and I’m excited to take on this new chapter in my career. I’m passionate about supporting the growth of women’s sport and leaving a legacy that inspires others to step up and take on new challenges.”

Martha Mataele (nee Lolohea) made her debut for Canterbury in New Zealand’s provincial competition in 2019, and scored a try in every single game in 2022 helping her team to another title.

In 2023, Mataele debuted for Matatū in Super Rugby Aupiki's inaugural season, playing alongside her sister to win the Aupiki.

Mataele then moved to Perth to join her husband, Manasa Mataele at the Western Force, before earning selection in the Black Ferns against Australia.

Martha is New Zealand born and identifies as Tongan, with an array of cultures represented in her family's bloodline. She has Samoan and Fiji blood on her father’s side, and Samoan, Fijian and Italian ties on her mother’s side.
