Murphy and Church to lead Eels in 2024

The Parramatta Eels are delighted to announce the appointment of Mahalia Murphy as Captain and Abbi Church as Vice-Captain for the 2024 NRLW season.

Mahalia Murphy acknowledged the importance of taking on the captaincy and leaving a legacy for future generations.

“As a proud Aboriginal sports woman who has represented Australia in both rugby union and rugby league, I am excited to be appointed Captain of the Parramatta Eels NRLW team and I look forward to leading the Blue & Gold this season,” she said.

“I want to lead with my actions and implement what I have experienced on an international level to help our team succeed.

“I look forward to setting an example for our dedicated pathways players beginning their NRLW journey and help the Parramatta Eels to become the best development club in the west,” she added.

Coach Steve Georgallis was thrilled to appoint Mahalia Murphy as Captain of the Parramatta Eels.

“It was very easy for me to appoint Mahalia as captain as she consistently showed her leadership qualities throughout the pre-season bringing a level of professionalism that inspired the squad to being the best they can be’,” said coach, Steve Georgallis.

“Mahalia’s communication and empathy skills are exemplary, and I saw that firsthand when she supported our inaugural Harvey Norman squad debutants at their first trial.”

Georgallis was also pleased to appoint Abbi Church as vice-captain to support Mahalia.

“Abbi is one of our originals, having made her debut in the Blue & Gold in the 2021 season”.

“She is a one-club player and an inspiration for our young players who are learning how to juggle their work and playing careers,” he added.

Abbi said she was delighted to be appointed Vice-Captain.

“The Vice-Captaincy is an important role and I look forward to supporting Mahalia in leading our team,” said Abbi Church.

“The Parramatta Eels is a great club, and I am proud to have represented the Blue & Gold for my NRLW career.

“We have a great mix of senior and new players and have connected really well encouraging each other during our pre-season training,” she added.

The Parramatta Eels will kick off their 2024 NRLW season against the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday, July 27 at 12.45pm.
